The Embassy of Hungary participates every year at the Jewish Culture Festival in various forms, such as concerts, panel discussions, screenings, etc. At this years’ event we wish to broaden our palette and put in spotlight an outstanding family memoir, “I Kiss Your Hands Many Times”, written by Marianne Szegedy-Maszák, author and award-winning journalist from Washington DC.

The magnificent wartime love story of her parents gives a panoramic and gripping narrative of a vanished world of great wealth and power, restoring an important missing chapter of European, Hungarian, and Holocaust history. “Marianne Szegedy-Maszák’s parents, Hanna and Aladár, met and fell in love in Budapest in 1940. He was a rising star in the foreign ministry—a vocal anti-Fascist who was in talks with the Allies when he was arrested and sent to Dachau. She was the granddaughter of Manfred Weiss, the industrialist patriarch of an aristocratic Jewish family that owned factories, were patrons of intellectuals and artists, and entertained dignitaries at their baronial estates.”

The book and the story behind it will be genuinely presented by Marianne Szegedy-Maszák herself which will be then followed by an open discussion, moderated by Katalin Deme, associate lecturer at Aarhus University. The event will be held in English.
